Darkness to Light presented our inaugural national awards at our National Conference, Ignite 2017.

We have so many amazing individuals and organizations that work alongside of us to make the world a safer place, training their communities to protect children from sexual abuse. Together, we have trained more than 1.4 million adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse, across 50 states and 17 countries.

During Ignite 2017, Darkness to Light wanted to recognize individuals who have gone above and beyond to further the mission of ending child sexual abuse. We presented awards for Instructor of the Year, Facilitator of the Year, and the Partner in Prevention Leadership Award. The recipient of each award has committed their time and energy to a grassroots prevention movement and has accomplished meaningful progress in their community. Their commitment, strength, and drive to prevent child sexual abuse is inspiring.

Instructor of the Year

Martha Tumblin, MED, LISW-CP, from Charleston, SC, has been a consultant to local community-based child sexual abuse initiatives since the late 1990’s, leading to the founding of Darkness to Light in 2000. Martha is one of the original Stewards of Children® Authorized Facilitators and is a Certifying Instructor. She has trained 5,345 adults in Stewards of Children® and has conducted 42 Facilitator Workshops all over the country, training 466 Authorized Facilitators. Martha’s dedication to Darkness to Light’s mission is unprecedented. She truly makes Darkness to Light a better organization and her expertise has helped our programs to grow and evolve to better protect children.

Facilitator of the Year

Training more than 2,000 adults in 2016, Kristen Pavlik McCallie works at The Emmy House in Chattanooga, TN, bringing Stewards of Children® to organizations and individuals in her community. Since she became a Facilitator in 2015, she has trained 3,123 adults in the prevention of child sexual abuse. As a new mom, Kristen sees Stewards of Children® in a whole new light. Kristin’s accomplishments are an inspiration to the Darkness to Light team and a reminder to all Facilitators to always aim high.

Partner in Prevention LEADERSHIP Award

Faith Boehmer has coordinated prevention and awareness efforts at the Fayetteville Child Advocacy Center in NC since 2009. A Stewards of Children® Authorized Facilitator and Certified Instructor, she has trained more than 1,600 adults in Stewards of Children® and authorized 58 Facilitators. Faith has led 77 organizations in Fayetteville to become a Partner in Prevention, ensuring they have trained 90% of their staff in child sexual abuse prevention, conducted background checks on all staff and volunteers, and have a code of conduct in place. That is truly amazing! Faith takes the time to walk organizations through the Partner in Prevention process, showing her commitment to her community.
