Katie’s Prevention Story

2019 was a year of positive change and growth. Individuals, organizations, and entire communities have embraced the challenge of ending child sexual abuse before it can even begin.

We love Katie’s story of prevention:

“I took the Stewards of Children® training after reading about it in Sports Illustrated. I learned a lot about how to create protective environments that reduce the risk of abuse. The training gave me the inspiration (and the courage) to ask my son’s daycare about their child protection policies.

The daycare did not have a comprehensive protection policy – not because they didn’t care deeply, but because they simply didn’t know where to turn or how common the problem is. I called Darkness to Light and they walked me through some strategies and sent sample policies. I’m proud to say now that all staff at my son’s daycare are trained in Stewards of Children®.

Active prevention and child protection are now a part of their staff onboarding and human resources policies. Staff are more comfortable talking about the issue. If more people take this training, I can see how it would lead to larger cultural change.”

Your support makes a difference in the lives of children, often through the support, we provide to the organizations that serve them. Let’s make 2020 the year of increased for protection for all children, no matter where they live, play, or learn.
