The first day of school is exciting. New teachers. New classrooms. New teammates. New routines.
For children, it’s the beginning of another school year filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and build relationships. For adults, it’s also an opportunity to pause and prepare.
As children return to classrooms, sports, clubs, after school programs, and other activities, they begin spending more time with trusted adults throughout their communities. Most of these relationships are positive and supportive. But prevention means recognizing that child sexual abuse can happen in any community, making it essential that adults remain informed, engaged, and prepared.
A safer school year doesn’t begin with children. It begins with adults.
Prevention Starts Before Something Goes Wrong
Many people think about prevention only after a crisis. But prevention is most effective before concerns ever arise.
The beginning of the school year offers more than a fresh start for children. It offers families and organizations an opportunity to pause, review expectations, strengthen communication, and make sure child safety is woven into everyday routines.
The environments children enter this year won’t happen by chance. They’re shaped by the adults who intentionally create them.
Start the School Year with a Prevention Check-In
Preparing for a new school year often means shopping for supplies, meeting teachers, reviewing schedules, and organizing calendars.
But it’s also an opportunity to prepare yourself.
Our Back-to-School Prevention Checklist was designed to help adults pause and reflect on the everyday actions that help create safer environments for children. Rather than adding more to your to-do list, it serves as a reminder of the small but meaningful ways adults can strengthen prevention throughout the school year.

Prevention Happens in Everyday Moments
One of the most important ways adults can help protect children isn’t through one big conversation. It’s through many small ones.
The school year naturally creates opportunities to stay connected.
- The drive home after school.
- Walking into practice together.
- Preparing lunches for the next day.
- Checking in after a field trip.
- Asking one extra question before bedtime.
Children don’t always share difficult experiences immediately. Staying engaged through everyday moments builds trust over time and reminds children they always have a safe adult who will listen.
Sometimes those conversations may feel awkward. Have them anyway.
The willingness to ask one more question, listen without judgment, and stay involved can make all the difference.
Keep Prevention Going Beyond the First Day of School
Back-to-school season is more than a fresh start. It’s an opportunity for adults to recommit to creating safer environments where children can learn, grow, and thrive.
Awareness is an important first step, but lasting prevention happens when adults continue learning, asking questions, staying engaged, and putting that knowledge into practice throughout the year. Your actions help shape the environments children experience every day.
If this blog sparked a new conversation or reminded you to take one more step, we invite you to download our Back-to-School Prevention Checklist, explore additional prevention resources, or support our Back-to-School campaign.
Every action helps equip more adults with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to help protect children, because what’s worth protecting is more than a successful school year. It’s a child’s safety, their voice, their trust, and the future they deserve.
