Consent, Healthy Touch and Boundaries

Understanding boundaries makes us more mindful about how we interact with children.

Healthy affection and touch are key in protecting children from sexual abuse, especially when it comes from parents, caregivers, and family members. Building on the foundation laid in Stewards of Children®, Darkness to Light’s evidence-informed training helps you learn guidelines for healthy touch and how to interact with children in safe and respectful ways. We strongly recommend completing Stewards of Children® before taking this course for the best experience and understanding.

What are the outcomes?

During the training, you will hear compelling stories from experts and survivors about being an active bystander. You will also:

  • Identify guidelines for healthy touch at home and in youth-serving settings
  • Interpret how to balance children’s needs for warmth and affection with safe, respectful ways of interacting
  • Define and model consent and healthy boundaries
  • Examine healthy sexual development in children to better identify normal and abnormal touching behaviors

* Facilitator-led versions—offered both in-person and virtually—are currently provided under the title Healthy Touch for Children & Youth. The updated Child Safety Foundations version, Consent, Healthy Touch and Boundaries, will be available in these formats starting this fall.
