At Darkness to Light, we believe teachers are more than educators—they’re protectors, mentors, and often, the first line of defense when it comes to recognizing and responding to child abuse…
Statistics reveal that school personnel identify 52% of all child abuse cases classified as causing harm to the child—more than any other profession. In addition, sexually abused children have higher rates of absenteeism, grade retention, and special education services.
Given the vital role educators play in recognizing and responding to abuse—and the profound impact abuse can have on a child’s learning and development—it’s essential that they are equipped with the tools to take action. That’s why, throughout May, our Tools for Teachers series focused on equipping educators with practical resources to support prevention efforts and foster safer environments for every child.
We hosted two powerful webinars filled with insight, guidance, and inspiration, and launched a brand-new Educator Toolkit designed to support Authorized Facilitators in engaging educators within their own communities.
If you missed the live sessions—or want to revisit these powerful conversations along with their resources—you can now access the full recordings of both webinars below.
Honoring Their Voices
“I want educators, school administrators, and mandated reporters to know what they’re up against from a survivor’s point of view because you all very well might be the lifeline that a child in trouble needs.” – Melissa Childs
In Honoring Their Voices, Melissa Childs and Jaimé Lopez shared their lived experience of abuse within the educational setting. This raw and heartfelt discussion reminds us that the most effective prevention strategies are rooted in listening—really listening—to the experiences of those who’ve lived it.
Why it’s a must-watch for educators:
-
Gain a deeper understanding of how abuse impacts children long-term.
-
Learn how survivor-informed practices can reshape school policies and culture.
-
Discover actionable ways to create safe, supportive environments in your classroom.
Honest Conversations
“We’re all running towards the same goal, and that’s to ensure the safety of our kids. Ultimately. That’s the goal.” – Karla Salas
During this Honest Conversation, experts from Prevent Child Abuse America, Columbia College, SC, and CAN Council discussed how schools can become safer spaces through awareness, education, and open communication.
