1 in 10 children will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. Every child deserves a childhood defined by safety, trust, curiosity, and joy. Moments of play, learning, trust, and belonging.

These are the moments worth protecting.

A Safe Childhood Means...

Freedom to play.
The ability to learn.
The chance to trust, grow, and simply be a kid.

It means laughter on the playground, curiosity in the classroom, and the confidence to explore the world knowing that safe adults are there to protect you.

These everyday moments shape who children become — and every child deserves the chance to experience them.

Protecting Children Starts With Us

These everyday moments shape who children become — and every child deserves the chance to experience them.

Prevention begins when adults understand how abuse happens and how to prevent it.

This Child Abuse Prevention Month, Darkness to Light invites individuals and communities to take action because childhoods are worth protecting.

What is Worth Protecting?

Behind this campaign is the courage of survivors—and the adults who chose to act.

For Debi Ray-Rivers’ daughters, what should have been safe, ordinary moments of growing up were disrupted when they experienced harm within a trusted relationship—an experience that changed everything for their family. Their story reflects a difficult truth: abuse often goes unseen, especially when it involves someone a child knows and trusts.

In the face of that, Debi chose to act—seeking to understand what had happened, supporting her daughters’ healing, and working to ensure other children are better protected.

Today, through her advocacy and her work with SCARS Bermuda, she is part of a broader effort to bring prevention education, survivor support, and awareness to communities.

Because what’s worth protecting is more than a moment—it’s a child’s sense of safety, their innocence, their voice, and the future they deserve.

Our work is far from done.

Protecting children starts with informed, empowered adults who are ready to act. That’s why our flagship training, Stewards of Children®, is designed to move people from awareness to action—providing practical, real-world steps to prevent abuse before it happens.

Because it only takes one adult to make a difference—but together, we can change the future.

Take the next step. Get trained. Help protect a child.

This campaign would not be possible without the dedication, passion, and support of SCARS Bermuda. Through their unwavering commitment to prevention and survivor support, they are helping build a safer future for children across Bermuda.
