Prevention Training for Staff and Volunteers

A good child protection policy should require training that brings awareness about child sexual abuse and shifts adult attitudes about whom is responsible for protecting children and what actions might be taken to protect children. Training is the key component of changing and improving people's attitudes and behaviors about what it means to keep children safe. Training in a group setting is also an excellent way to put everyone, including potential perpetrators, on notice that your organization takes prevention seriously and is not a place that will be easy for a perpetrator to fly under the radar.

For this reason, Darkness to Light has developed the Stewards of Children program. Stewards of Children teaches adults how to prevent, recognize, and react to the signs of child sexual abuse. The program is applicable to organizations of all kinds and is available to be taken individually online, or in a group setting lead by a trained facilitator. Anyone that works with children in your organization should be trained.

In addition to consciousness training about sexual abuse prevention, staff who will administer the child protection policy should be carefully trained on the nuts and bolts of that responsibility and the appropriate mandated reporting laws for their state. Also, in the policy regarding training, provisions should be made for frequency of "re-training." Many liability insurers recommend that staff/volunteers be re-trained and re-screened every 3 years.
